When the matronly-looking, singing sensation Susan Boyle took the world by storm with her breathtaking voice, her unattractive looks were hardly on anyone’s mind. The lady who has never been kissed in her life suddenly had a line of men wanting to be the first one to kiss her and even marry her. And all those who thought famous women are a direct result of good looks were forced to think again. So is unattractive yet talented the new sexy for men?
VJ Cyrus Sahukar seems to think so. “Some of the most ordinary faces have become the world’s greatest sex icons,” he exclaims.
“Take Bob Dylan for instance, the man wouldn’t be considered attractive, if he couldn’t sing like he does. But yes, of course, popular notions of female beauty has made things harder for talented women, but at the end, looks don’t matter. Talent makes you sexy. In fact, attractiveness is ugly, if you don’t have a personality to match,” Cyrus says.
“Human beings are not so superficial. Frida, one of the most iconic Spanish painters was a sex symbol in her younger days. People who didn’t know her personally would even say she is ugly. But when you see her paintings and personality, you understand why all Spanish men lusted after her. So yes, ugly but talented is sexy,” he adds.
Other British female singers like Adele, and Lily Allen may be much more pound heavy than svelte, young pop icons of today, but they are more loved for their celebrated voices than their lack of well toned bodies, feels actor Sonu Sood.
Even Oprah Winfrey who would never be considered conventionally attractive made it to the list of sexiest women in the world, only thanks to her talent.
“Talent is a trait that can make anyone look highly attractive. And beauty is something that time will soon rob you off, but being gifted with a talent gives you an aura and a confidence that lasts you forever. All men will vouch for the fact that talent is almost magnetic is nature and draws everyone to you. There is no bigger turn on for a man than a woman who can do more than just look perfect,” Sonu says.
Some like television personality like Roshan Abbas, feel that a “beautiful mind” and great skill “makes up for a lot of other things”.
“Men would rather enjoy the company of a plain, intelligent women than a gorgeous woman with no brains. It is popular culture that has drilled the message into everyone’s heads that a woman has to be attractive to be successful. In the real world, people know better that life doesn’t work that way,” he says.
